(Mali Health Organizing Project)

Dr. Diakaridia Traore, the MHOP Health Director, has received a fellowship from the international non-profit Adopt a Doctor. Adopt a Doctor's fellowship enables doctors from developing countries to work in their own communities by providing them with a livable wage. According to the Adopt a Doctor website:

"Many African countries find it difficult to attract and retain experienced physicians because salaries are so low. In Malawi, for example, a doctor earns on average just $70 USD per month and thus practices medicine in the country for an average of only 3 years. Physicians are leaving developing nations such as Malawi in droves to seek more reasonable pay and better resources in other parts of the world."

The fellowship from Adopt a Doctor will provide financial support for Dr. Traore to continue his work with MHOP. “By supporting Dr. Traoré,” said Ray Rickman, President of Adopt a Doctor, “our program will keep one of the best and brightest minds in Mali. As seen from his accomplishments, it is evident that Dr. Traoré’s presence in Mali will continue to have a positive impact on so many lives.”
