Inauguration of the MHOP Dental Program
Monday, June 15, 2009
(Mali Health Organizing Project) Dental care is an often-neglected area
of primary care, a challenge MHOP is working to
overcome through its new dental program. Most
dental infections go untreated for lack of
funds or access to care until patients find
themselves incapacitated and forced to spend
precious savings on expensive hospital trips
for complex surgeries. By providing primary
dental care in Sikoroni, MHOP aims to catch
dental problems early, preventing unnecessary
pain and debt.
In June, MHOP hosted a
dental training by volunteer Dr. George
Dumitrescu. Following the training, MHOP has
hired Dr. Sibiri Traore to provide on-going
care to target families in Sikoroni. Dr. Traore
is the first dentist to provide affordable care
in Sikoroni, and his work will serve as a key
component to MHOPs efforts to reduce the burden
of disease in local slums.
