READ MALI
  1. Africa Doesn't Matter: How the West Has Failed the Poorest Continent and What We Can Do About it, by Giles Bolton. The book explores the difficulty of effectively overcoming poverty, education deficits and lack of resources in Africa from the perspective of an African leader. Bolton also details the role of the West, especially the United States, in assisting (and sometimes thwarting) African leaders. Read to the end to discover your role as a voter and consumer in the West.
  2. David Wisniewski's Sundiata, Lion King of Mali adds an artistic flair to one of the most foundational epics of Mali, the story of emperor Sundiata (or Sundjata) of the Malinke empire, and famed creator of one of the world's first constitutions.
  3. Sidikiba's Kora Lesson, by Ryan Skinner. This children's book introduces readers of all ages to the kora, a 21-stringed Malian instrument. Sidikida learns to play, becoming a man in the process.
  4. Baba Wague Diakite bridges Mali and the United States from his home in Portland, OR. Titles include I lost my tooth in Africa and Me-Ann the serpent.
  5. In Griot Time is highly recommended by Mali-adopted Americans who want the rest of us to know what it's like. Banning Eyre, a guitarist, brings a lyricism and musicality to the text, revealing Bamako's musical landscape.
  6. If you're especially interested in Mali's colonial or post-colonial history, grab Greg Mann's Native Sons. The book shares insights on the life and times of Malian veterans of the French army.
