Mali has only one doctor per 12,500 people. The World Health Organization, in contrast, recommends that every country have one doctor per 1,000 people. Providing health services without sufficient doctors and nurses is a daunting task. Training and retaining medical students is only part of the solution for countries like Mali though.

Maternal and child health isn't just about treating illness. It is also about ensuring families understand why sickness occurs and what they can do to prevent it (be it attending prenatal care or handwashing) while also making sure they have the tools to do so (like soap, bed nets, or money for medical fees). Our Community Health Workers are on the frontline of health in Sikoro doing just that.

Caitlin could not understand why her host family in Mali always laughed when she would tell them that her cat had kept her up at night. In a very logical decision, she had named her cat "Jakama" which means "cat" in bambara, the local language in Mali. Only later did she learn that "Jakama" is also slang for "penis."

"I was mortified, but you know, you get over it," said Caitlin, taking the discovery with a grain of salt and changing the cat's name to "Kuma", meaning "to speak".

But she quickly realized that the people there would benefit a lot more from some organizational help than they would from another research study.
